Stereo Microphones and Stereo Setups

MSTC 64

MSTC 64The MSTC 64 is a “plug-in-play” solution for capturing stereophonic audio using the ORTF technique. Placement is relatively uncritical with ORTF, which is further simplified with the MSTC 64’s fixed T-shaped body. The microphone is equipped with two built-in microphone amplifiers, and a matched pair of MK 4g Cardioid capsules of the Colette Modular System. The Cardioid capsules are set 170 mm apart with an included angle of 110 as defined by the ORTF recording Standard. The stereophonic recording angle is 95.

The MSTC 64g ships standard in the Schoeps “Matte gray” finish which is designated by the lower case “g” suffix. The output connector is a standard XLR 5-pin and like a CMC 6U, accepts either 12V or 48V phantom power. When purchased, the MSTC 64g includes an SG20 stand clamp and a beautiful form-fitted Schoeps wood box with a matching certificate for the MK 4g capsules. Yes, the capsules can be removed and used within the Colette/CMC System.

Cables

CablesThe MSTC 64g does not come with output cables, thus they must be purchased separately. The Schoeps AK SU/2U cable is a standard stereo, 0.5 meter “Y” cable with a 5-pin Female to (2) 3-pin Male connectors to plug in to two channels of a microphone preamp. You will also want a 5-pin Female to 5-pin Male stereo cable - Schoeps offers a selection of these cables designated as KS 5U (5 meter), KS 10U etc. up to 30 meters as standard.

ORTF is probably the simplest stereo technique in general use. In most situations it produces an evenly spread stereo image with good localization.

The ORTF stereo technique can also be achieved with these other Schoeps products:

Colette System
Cardioid ST Set with the addition of a UMS 20 stereo bar
Cardioid ST Set with the addition of (2) KC 5g cables and STC 4g stereo bar

CCM Series
(2) CCM 4 with M100C mini stereo bar or STC 4g
For outdoors: (2) CCM 4 L matched with WSR ORTF LU and WJ ORTF

CMXY 4V

CMXY 4V The CMXY 4V is a “one of a kind” compact and versatile X/Y stereo microphone that is both elegant and very unobtrusive. Its most unique feature is the ingenious gear arrangement in the base of the microphone, allowing the capsules to always rotate equally and in opposite directions. This greatly simplifies setting up the microphone while providing an extremely small physical footprint. The CMXY 4V is ideal for stereo music recordings, TV and broadcast use, e.g. on a table for discussions, for presenters, boom operations or as a stereo spot microphone on a stand.

The CMXY 4V ships standard in the Schoeps “Matte gray” finish which is designated by the lower case “g” suffix. There is a choice of two different output connectors. The most common is a standard XLR 5-pin, designated as CMXY 4V Ug. For outdoor applications with a Rycote basket-style windshield, Schoeps offers the CMXY 4V Ig with a miniature Binder 5-pin connector to shorten the mic and keep the windshield as compact as possible. Like a CMC 6U, both versions of the CMXY 4V accepts either 12V or 48V phantom power. The fixed CCM 4V Cardioid elements of the CMXY 4V are not removable.

Cables

cmxy 4v-2When purchased, the CMXY 4V Ug includes an AK SU/2U 0.5 meter “Y” cable with a 5-pin Female to (2) 3-pin Male connectors. You will also want a 5-pin extension stereo cable - Schoeps offers a selection of these cables designated as KS 5U (5 meter), KS 10U etc. up to 30 meters as standard. The CMXY 4V Ig includes a 5 meter KS 5 IU Binder to XLR-5 cable. You will need to purchase the AK SU/2U separately and we highly recommend using the CMXY the A20S elastic shockmount.

CMXY microphones are delivered in a beautiful form-fitted Schoeps wood box with a matching certificate for the CCM 4Vg elements. Neither versions include a mount, we recommend the A 20S suspension and the WMS special windscreen even for indoor use.

Unlike conventional microphones that have one fixed and one rotatable capsule, the angle between the capsules of the CMXY 4V can be adjusted with out affecting the main stereo axis.

The X/Y stereo technique can also be achieved with these other Schoeps products:

Colette System
Cardioid ST Set with the addition of a UMS 20 stereo bar

CCM Series
(2) CCM 4 or CCM 4V with M100C mini stereo bar
For outdoors: (2) CCM 4 L matched with Rycote Stereo XBG and MS/XY insert
